ANNOUNCEMENT: FINAL STUDY GUIDES & GROUP STUDY SESSIONS (and party)

Dear Fellow Students,

I will soon begin compiling the information from notes to create a study guide for the final in our class, which is scheduled for May 4 - just over a month away!


The study guide will not be posted to this blog. It might go up after the end of the semester once I've cleaned everything up, but it won't be publicly available before the final. However, if you would like a copy, you can email me at mbarnes@smu.edu; my aim is to send it out around April 24.

Anyone who helps me out, by contributing information or copies of their own notes, will definitely get a copy of the study guide I generate, before the final.


I am also planning to organize a study session, where I will be happy to distribute copies of the study guide as well (via electronic means). Here are the scheduled study times/locations:

Fellow students please remember this class is incredibly fast-paced class and it's often difficult to hear words or remember their spelling even if you've heard them before. I definitely ask you to be patient with some areas of the notes, and don't forget that I am recording as well as writing notes and I don't always write everything down. Tonight especially I seemed to misspell a LOT of things... So of course I've also followed up with quickly Googling everything to get a quick re-take on the lesson.

Once again I'll just ask anyone who uses this blog, if you've been recording your own Google lists, PLEASE share your notes so everyone can benefit. Thanks! :)

What is the will to live?

*Reflection:

I was six years old. Does this mean I'm "off the hook"? Hotel Rwanda came out in 2004. I first saw it in 2007, as a college freshman. I had recently decided I wanted to declare as an Anthropology major. Something in the film indicated to me that in a way Anthropology was at fault for the horrors in Rwanda. It was because of European Anthropologists coming in and categorizing the people into groups like Hutu and Tutsi, and then declaring both subtly and overtly that one should be superior to the other and creating institutions to reinforce this notion, which enacted the system of inequality and strife which catalyzed the violent retaliation.

I am definitely not off the hook for this one. This was a defining moment in my college career; it was a point where I decided how I should use my degree, and when I realized Human Rights was a minor, it seemed the obvious thing to do.
